8 Secrets to a Profitable Trade Show

By Larry Baltz You couldnt contain your excitement and eagerly reserved exhibit space at the upcoming regional trade show. I know what you were thinkingThe traffic at this show will be fantastic and Ill get more leads than I ever imagined. And when the show was over, you got nothing for all your hard work. So what happened? Why didnt your $600 booth space, $400 for collateral materials, and two days on the show floor produce any meaningful results? You got nothing because you had no valid method to address the two most critical trade show issues. First, is the show a reasonable marketing vehicle for you, and second, if so, how can you best use it to attract prospects. Without any thought, most business owners assume that a trade show in their industry is a smart decision and they plunk down big dollars with little consideration to other important details. There are many factors to consider though. Trade shows can be one of the most productive and profitable means for promoting your company and your products. But you must know the secrets and follow a process or its a waste of your time and money. 1. Request information from Show Management Dont commit to any trade show without first requesting information from show management. What are the profiles of the attendees? How many attended last year? How are they marketing the show? These are important issues you must consider before making a commitment. 2. Create a plan dont just show up with a booth Consider your goal of the show and then establish a plan. You have much more at your disposal than a table and booth: show theme, dcor, signage, giveaways, literature, staffing, lead retrieval, and more. Each of these can be critical to your success. 3. Consider pre-marketing Data is available that clearly indicates that pre-show marketing significantly increases booth attendance. A mailer or two in advance might be an appropriate component. 4. Give attendees a compelling reason to visit your booth I have walked many trade show floors and time after time have seen booth personnel standing out front like rigid toy soldiers, with the standard stack of company brochures and business cards lined up on the table. Is there any wonder no one was interested in any of them? You dont have to hire a clown, but do something to attract attention and let the attendees know the value you offer them. 5. Educate and train booth personnel Your people are your greatest asset. Professionalism, knowledge, attentiveness and a big smile are always appreciated. 6. Use a system to record individual lead information If a card-scanning lead retrieval system is not available, then create lead sheets for collecting information, or if nothing else, write on the backs of business cards. Nothing is more frustrating than to create a lot of show leads and not know what your prospects needs are when you follow-up with them. 7. Follow-up promptly with prospects Youve invested your time and money, why not maximize your results? Leads left unattended will quickly grow cold. Set a specific date and be certain all leads are contacted before then. 8. Evaluate your show ROI Track your leads and sales for each show so you know whether or not to consider that individual one again in future years. Profitable trade shows require much more than managing a booth space. Create an organized and systematic marketing plan and youll have the tools and processes you need to achieve your goals. Effective Bass Fishing Tips For Landing a Big Catch

By Areeb Khatib If you want to be better at bass fishing, then there are some critical factors that you should be aware of. Bass fishing is one of the most popular sports in America, Canada, and many other countries. As a result, the competition is very intense, and to gain a true advantage, you have to know your fish, their habitat, and your equipment inside out. Bass is treated as a “sports” fish rather than a meal, although its quite healthy and edible. During tournaments, bass are caught and weighed before being thrown back in the water. There’s even a holding tank that is used for providing medical treatment to the bass, if needed. To become successful at bass fishing, there are a variety of things you need to keep in mind. First and foremost, the biology and behavior of the fish are extremely critical factors. Different environments and water temperatures have varying affects on the way that bass behave, influencing your methodology and techniques in different ways. If you are fishing in very cold or very warm temperatures, then the bass won’t be as healthy or plentiful, but at the same time, catching them will be much easier due to their physical weakness. On the other hand, moderate temperatures are prime environments in which bass flourish, giving them the physical strength to fight being caught. Typically, bass like to hang out in covered, sheltered areas where they can prey on smaller fish. Knowing this piece of information can help you identify areas where bass are present, as well as the types of lures you should be using. The second critical factor for successful bass fishing, besides the biology and habitat, is your equipments. Your rods, reels, lines and lures will vary depending on the environment, the nature of the particular bass fish, and your skill level. Expertise in fishing maps and electronic fish finders can give you a distinct advantage over the competition. More often than not, the first couple of spots you decide to fish in might not produce good results. It is very usual for anglers to move around during fishing tournaments, and if you’re handy with the map, then you can quickly locate a better fishing spot before the competition can. A backdoor trick you can use to quickly learn about a particular fishing area is to visit the local angler stores. As fishing enthusiasts, the owners can give you valuable tips and advice that can give you a head-start. Outside of tournaments, there are many recreational anglers that would love to share their knowledge with you, especially if you make them feel like the “teacher” and portray yourself as the “student”. Hobbyists love nothing more than to be proclaimed as experts in their field. Online, there are a variety of forums, chat-groups, discussion lists, and e-mail newsletters where you can meet anglers world-wide and share ideas. Consider becoming a moderator at a forum so you can always be the first to receive valuable fishing info. Although this is a basic article, the tips covered can be explored in further depth. Remember, the number one rule of success is to humble yourself and become a student and observer of fishing. Elder Care Business in 2006: Opening and Marketing Your Dream

By Valerie VanBooven I love the start of a new year. It brings to mind that the possibilities are endless, and for many of us, its a great time to start something new or different in our lives. Id be a rich person if I had a nickel for everyone out there who has decided to open a new in-home care agency, open a professional geriatric care management practice, or start some sort of elder care business. (I get a call or email about this at least 3 times per week consistently!) What I know for sure is that there is plenty of business to go around. As we live longer, as our parents and grandparents live longer, we create an unlimited opportunity and need for senior related services. The key is to create an appropriate and realistic business and marketing plan that generates clients and results. The key to the senior market, is not surprisingly, their adult children. If you have been in the senior market for any amount of time, you know that families often contact senior service providers when they are in crisis due to an acute illness or other event that signals the need for services and support. So whether you are just starting a new senior/elder care business, or already own one- think about marketing to more than just seniors. Your target audience may be a little younger than you imagine! Consider some of the other things we have talked about over the last few months: Issues related to senior living options, senior care options, and financial issues that affect seniors require education, so educate your prospects. Advertising with vanity ads and the same old thing is OUT, and offering information in the form of a free report, CD, seminar, or consultation is IN. Directing messages to baby-boomers who HAVE aging parents is key. Finding them is not as easy as buying a list. Understanding financial options for seniors is a MUST for all senior service providers. Its impossible to offer good advice to a family if you arent up on the latest programs and strategies. Networking is possibly the most effective and least costly form of advertising and marketing. You should attend only the networking events that make sense for your business. Pick 2-3 key groups and stick with them. (But try as many as you can, it never hurts to check out a new group!) Finally, when you are budgeting for your marketing, budget for consistency and frequency, not the big bang. This market does not work like that. o The reality is that you must touch a consumer 6-10 times- either through print, radio, or TV, in order to get a response. o Running a radio ad 4 times and pulling the ad because you didnt get a phone call is not the way to execute a marketing strategy. o This is a sensitive subject for many (long-term care needs), so in short order you must articulate your message, interrupt your target (ie get their attention), engage them, educate them, and then make an offer. o Offering something for free- your time, your printed report, your audio CD, etc, will get the most response. Some people like to remain anonymousso let them, but engage them. Finally, this is a very good year to live your dream, be an entrepreneur, and serve the greatest generation of all time. Take a realistic, slow but steady and consistent course of action, and you will succeed! We need more senior service providers who really know their stuff. We need senior service providers who are educated, efficient, and trustworthy. Best wishes for continued success in 2006! Wedding Bouquets for Life

By David Chandler One of the most beautiful of the bride’s adornments at a wedding is the bouquet. Normally constructed of fresh flowers, the wedding bouquet would last for a week or two, and then have to be dried or tossed. Today that is not the case; today’s modern bride has options that are more permanent. There are various bridal books, magazines and shops to help you choose the perfect style and color. The arrangement you select should be a reflection of your personality and/or the color scheme of your wedding. A growing popularity in wedding flowers is silk flowers. Silk flowers are non-allergenic, will never wilt and can be kept as a remembrance of your special day for years to come. Another advantage over silk flowers is their cost and durability. Another option for the wedding bouquets is stunning handmade porcelain flowers. Porcelain and silk flowers are available in traditional styles. With a seemingly unlimited array of colors, these amazing creations last a lifetime. Many come with a display stand included in the purchase price, so your wedding bouquet now has become an exquisite family heirloom. As you plan your special day, consider the option of a porcelain handmade bouquet. The cost is a bit higher, yet the memories of your ceremony will be with you forever. In addition, your wedding bouquet will be with you as well, a permanent reminder of your love for each other. Wedding Planning For the Older Bride

By Glenna Tooman You have been alone for several years; now you have found that special someone with whom to share your life. As you begin your wedding planning, you will find that you have many more decisions to make than younger brides. Your body has changed and the gown that looks great on a 25 year-old will not look the same on a 50 year-old. You may have children and possibly grandchildren to consider. You may have a home and/or investments that you want to leave to your family. You or your groom may have health issues. All of these things and more need to be considered before you say I Do. Wedding Gown: Many older women find choosing a wedding gown to be the most difficult part of planning their wedding. Unless you work out regularly, you may not want a revealing gown like those found in most bridal salons. Instead, look for gowns designed for cruises and for party dresses or consider having a dress made. Children: If you have children, either still at home or grown, you will want to provide for their futures. If you have young children, you should have a will that includes guardianship provisions if something should happen to you. You may or may not want your new spouse to assume guardianship. Perhaps a sibling or your parents would be a better choice. Assets: You may want your personal assets, including investments and property, to go to your children in case of your death rather than to your new spouse and his children. If so, you should talk with an attorney and draw up both a will and a pre-marital agreement to assure that your wishes are fulfilled. Home/business: You and/or your future husband may own a home or a business. If one or both of you have homes, you will need to decide where you will live and what you will do with the other property. You might choose to live in one of the homes and either sell or rent the other. Or, you may decide to sell both homes and purchase one together. This is sometimes a better option if one or both of you lived in the home with a previous spouse. If one or both of you owns a business, you may need to contact an attorney to draw up a succession plan if you have not yet done so. The plan will include instructions about the future of the business, including future ownership and how the assets of the business will be handled. If the business is a sole proprietorship or a partnership, the business will automatically dissolve upon the death of the owner, so you will want to be prepared. Health: If one or both of you suffer from a long term health problem, you may need to determine how the expenses of the illness, as well as any future care needs, will be handled. If one of you has health insurance through a former spouses employer, you may lose it when you remarry. Debts: One or both of you may bring debts into the marriage. If the debts are significant, you may need to maintain separate bank accounts and keep your assets separate until the debts have been satisfied. If one of you has a poor credit record or a past bankruptcy that could adversely affect both of you if you commingle your finances. Pension Payments/Survivor Benefits Payments: If you or your fianc receive survivor benefit payments or pension payments related to the retirement of a deceased spouse, you may lose those payments when your remarry, so be sure to find out. This is also true for military retirement and survivor benefit payments. Social Security: If you are receiving Social Security survivor benefit payments on your deceased spouses earning record and you are under age 60, you may lose those benefits if you remarry. If you remarry after age 60 (50 if you are disabled), you will continue to collect benefits. Sharing your older years with a new spouse can bring great happiness but getting to the altar successfully will take some careful planning to be certain that you are not unpleasantly surprised by the loss of income, insurance, or other issues. Therefore, take some time to visit with your attorney and an accountant to make sure that you are fully prepared to enter the next phase of your new life. Signaling Criteria and a Marketing Mistake

By Craig Lutz-Priefert Heres a line from Law and Order, Criminal Intent that every marketer should memorize. DA Arthur Branch, about to sign an arrest warrant for a judge in a high-profile case: Its not enough to do good; you gotta be seen doing good. And thats the essence of signaling criteria. In his classic Competitive Advantage Michael Porter mentions two types of buyer criteria: use criteria = what the product does for the buyersignaling criteria = how the buyer thinks or feels about what the product does for the buyer Many marketers think their job ends at providing effective signaling criteria. We say: Hey, Ive told a great story, Ive produced a super TV spot, my click-through rates are fantasticIve done my job. And by one measure, you have. If you are hired to write a great ad and nothing else, then yes youve certainly done the client right. But if you own a small business, or if you are in charge of company-wide marketing, or if you own an agency that wants to keep an account for years, then you better quickly learn to pay attention to use criteria. Because, as Porter so accurately point out, a company can make an OK product and create superior marketing communications and best a company that turns out a superior product but fails to let the customer know how great the product really is. For a while. But eventually a competitor with so-so advertising but better products usually catches up with the advertising leader. The advertising message is forgotten, and the user is stuck with the product. And the product, unless it is really fantastic, doesnt speak for itself. And if theres a better competitive product out there, the customer is going to find it eventually. And Porter wrote this in the 80s, before instant internet product reviews were available. Whats the smart marketer to do? Keep signaling–after the sale. Craig Lutz-Priefert is President of Marketing Hawks, a firm providing essential marketing vision for small business. Marketing Hawks also provides expert sales presentation review at their VideoMyPitch website. Marijuana Should Remain Illegal

By Matt Christensen The debate to legalize marijuana has gone on for some time. Today I will add my two cents to the debate. There are several reasons to consider the legalization of marijuana. People will argue that it’s better for you than tobacco, and cigarettes are legal. It has legitimate health uses for certain people. If it were legal it would reduce drug related crime such as drug deals going wrong. My two cents to add to those arguments is taxes. It’s a huge business, if it were legal it could be taxed. Also it could be taxed heavily. It would probably take a big chunk out of the deficit. With those benefits, why should it not be legalized? There are several reasons it should remain illegal. It’s still a drug and effects health and judgment. Marijuana is a gateway drug and leads to other harder drugs and criminal activity. Remaining illegal will help prevent the harder drugs from being used as well. My two cents on remain illegal is the fact that it does kill brain cells. The United States is starting to lag behind in education. Generally other countries are becoming more intelligent. In this day and age it’s all about information and technology. We need the country to be as intelligent as possible. Stopping marijuana use will help. In conclusion, I am in favor of marijuana continuing to be illegal despite the possible tax revenue that could be generated. Wedding Cakes

By Jason Gluckman Weddings are a once in a lifetime event for a couple. So it is only natural that no stone is left unturned to make it an affair to remember. The culmination of a wedding is the reception. The centerpiece at the reception is usually an elaborate wedding cake. The frosting is usually white, to symbolize purity and newness. They are often made in tiers, or levels, and there is usually some form of elaborate decoration. When purchasing a cake you must decide on the size, type and style of the cake you want. Most wedding cakes have three tiers and are frosted with Royal Icing. However, there are many variations on this theme. Wedding cakes can come in any shape you like. Hearts shaped cakes are gaining in popularity, as are sheet cakes for smaller, less elaborate weddings. Colors and flowers (chocolate and fresh) also seem to be the modern brides preference. Choosing a baker can be a chore. Make sure you give a clear picture of what you want and ask plenty of questions. Get everything in writing including the price, delivery date and time. Its also important to reserve your cake by ordering it well before your wedding day. Make sure you sample several wedding cakes from various bakers. There are differences and your preference is what counts. Plenty of ideas can be found in books and on the Internet, so dont be afraid to explore before making a commitment. On this very special day, you want your wedding cake to look and taste great. Cake provides detailed information on Baby Shower Cake, Birthday Cake, Cake, Cake Decorating and more. Weight Loss Camps

By Kevin Stith Obesity is slowly becoming an issue that more and more people have to contend with. As peoples lifestyles change due to developments in technology and home entertainment, the temptation of living a sedentary lifestyle is becoming more attractive. A sector that has been adversely affected by this lifestyle are children, who are now spending less time outdoors to play and who choose to stay at home to watch cartoons, play video games and surf the Net. Some of the adverse effects that these children go through include having to face health risks. Child obesity has been proven to lead to various diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, which are due to improper nutrition and lack of exercise. A Possible solution Apart from enrolling your child in a gym or making him do a certain sport, there is a viable option that you can take, which will provide your child with a weight loss program in a summer camp setting. Weight loss camps were created to specifically help children lose weight in a fun and educational way. This is because in weight loss camps, you can be assured that your child will be provided with the proper nutrition as well as encouraged to participate in activities such as sports that help him become healthier and more aware of health issues. Apart from these, weight loss camps also help children with weight problems build a better self-image and self-esteem so they can better deal with the emotional aspect of having weight problems over the long term. This can also help your child have the discipline to continue the program and live a healthier lifestyle even after he leaves the camp. One of the best ways to address your childs obesity is to enroll him in a weight loss camp. This is because these camps offer fun and educational programs that are designed to help your child live a healthier lifestyle. These programs do not only include physical activities but also educational activities that can help your child become healthier and make healthy choices even after camp. Camp provides detailed information on Camps, Summer Camps, Day Camps, Weight Loss Camps and more. Camp is affiliated with Summer School Programs. Simple Weight Loss Strategies Part 2

By Waller Jamison If dieting doesnt work, what other strategies can you adopt for simple weight loss? One possible approach is to design your own weight loss diet and learn to cook. You know the type of food you enjoy and you know whats good for you and what isnt. It may seem that these are miles apart. However, it is possible to combine the two in a way that will make weight loss easy and keep your taste buds happy at the same time. This technique will require a little time and effort, but the long term benefits a healthier slimmer you will be well worth it. Start by making a list of all your favourite dishes, including takeaways and ready meals. Now think what could be added to these to make them healthier. And what could be taken away to make them healthier? Youve probably written vegetables and perhaps lean meat in answer to the first question and salt, sugar and fat in answer to the second. So lets look at your favourite meals. Fish and chips? Certainly likely if you live in the UK. Try oven chips with baked salmon, with a variety of frozen vegetables youll be cutting out so many calories by getting rid of the batter and deep-fried chips, that you can allow yourself a little ketchup. And this is very easy to cook. How about sweet and sour pork? Cut out the batter again and use lean meat in a sauce with a little ketchup (I have this from a Chinese chef tomato ketchup is the secret ingredient in sweet and sour sauce! If you can find sugar free ketchup, so much the better), tinned pineapple in juice (not syrup), some balsamic vinegar and a load of vegetables. If you eat ready meals, read the labels and see if you can come up with a healthier version by omitting some of the unnecessary ingredients, such as wheat and sugar, and cutting down on the fat. Obviously, this wont be possible for all your favourite dishes, but sugar, wheat and excess amounts of fat find their way into so much of what we eat, that its not difficult to make your own diet-conscious alternatives. Learning to cook is a sure way to know exactly what goes into your mouth and will not only help you control your weight, but will also improve your health. Once youve mastered a few weight loss recipes, you can cook these dishes in bulk and freeze them. This will save time and will mean you always have something tasty on hand for times when you are busy, hungry and need something to eat in a hurry. Try getting the whole family involved if you have kids this will really help them to become independent and what better gift can you give them than the key to a healthy future? And with so many children and teens struggling with obesity, teaching them simple weight loss strategies will help them avoid becoming overweight in the first place.
